Depp, Burton Sweet on SWEENEY
Saturday August 19 6:28 AM ET
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp both had sudden schedule changes, which gave an opening for the long-delayed dark musical to find its way to the screen.

It's partnership project number six for Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Depp has been cast in the lead of the long-awaited film version of the Stephen Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd, which will cast Depp in the singing and dancing role of the murderous title character, otherwise known as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Warner Brothers is partnering with DreamWorks on the project, and Paramount will distribute domestically, while Warners will handle the international distribution. The film has been in the works at Warners for ten years, and Burton was originally attached to the project. DreamWorks picked up the project when that deal fell through, and for a while director Sam Mendes was going to take the big chair. Burton's schedule came apart in June when Paramount put his next project Ripley's Believe It or Not on hold, and the opening appeared for the long delayed musical.
Depp, likewise, had a hole in his schedule when the Peter Wier project Shantaram fell apart at Warners. Now the studios are hurrying to put the project on its feet. Rehearsals and recordings begin in November, and shooting is set to start at Pinewood Studios near London in February. Sweeney Todd is expected in the theatres at Christmas 2007.
DEPP AND PIRATES DOMINATES PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS
JOHNNY DEPP emerged victorious at the People's Choice Awards last night (09JAN07), winning three prizes including Best Male Actor and Best Male Action Star. Depp also took home Best Onscreen Match-Up alongside his PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST co-star KEIRA KNIGHTLEY. The sequel won Best Movie and Best Movie Drama at the event at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium. JENNIFER ANISTON was named Best Female Star, while her THE BREAK-UP co-star and former boyfriend VINCE VAUGHN won Best Leading Man honours. On collecting her award, Aniston made fun of BRITNEY SPEARS recently being photographed without any underwear on: "Man, I tell you, it's a lucky thing we do wear underwear, huh?" CAMERON DIAZ and HALLE BERRY won Best Leading Lady and Best Female Action Star respectively. Elsewhere, CARRIE UNDERWOOD was named Best Female Singer and KENNY CHESNEY earned the title of Best Male Singer.
